How to Keep Your Gearbox or Transmission Healthy – A Driver’s Guide

Check Fluid Levels Correctly

To accurately check your transmission fluid, the engine must be running and the transmission at normal operating temperature. This typically means letting the car run for 5–10 minutes. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground, the handbrake is engaged, and all gears have been cycled through before inspecting the dipstick. Always follow the specific procedure outlined in your vehicle’s owner manual.

Use the Right Type and Amount of Fluid

Not all transmission fluids are the same, and using the wrong one—or getting the quantity wrong—can cause serious internal damage. Underfilling leads to overheating and poor lubrication, while overfilling can cause pressure build-up and seal failure. Check your manual or speak with your dealer or mechanic to be absolutely sure you’re using the correct specification and quantity.

Only Top Up When the Engine is Warm

Adding transmission fluid should only be done once the vehicle has warmed up. Cold measurements can be misleading and lead to overfilling. After topping up, run the engine for a few more minutes and re-check the level to ensure it’s correct. This small step can save you from big problems.

Service Your Transmission Regularly

Like your engine oil, gearbox oil breaks down over time. Manual gearboxes usually need an oil change every 30,000–60,000 miles, while automatics may last longer but often get overlooked. Regular servicing, including changing filters where applicable, helps prevent wear and avoids costly repairs later.

Drive Sensibly and Avoid Unnecessary Strain

Towing heavy loads or driving aggressively can put extreme pressure on your transmission. Always let the vehicle warm up before hard use—cold oil offers little protection. Smooth, steady driving habits go a long way in preserving both manual and automatic transmissions.

Important: A newly reconditioned gearbox can burn out within 50 miles if fluid is too low or incorrectly filled. Always double-check levels after installation or service.
